What is insulin resistance?
Insulin resistance means that the body’s cells become less sensitive to insulin. As a result, more and more insulin is needed to remove the same amount of glucose from the bloodstream and transport it into the cells.
At first, the body tries to compensate for this by producing extra insulin. Because of this, insulin resistance can remain unnoticed for a long time.
Insulin resistance usually does not develop overnight. It is often a gradual process influenced by multiple factors, such as nutrition, lack of movement, chronic stress, poor sleep, hormonal imbalance, genetic predisposition, and long-term overload of the system.
Possible signs of insulin resistance
Insulin resistance can be associated with a wide range of symptoms.
For example:

difficulty losing weight or weight gain, especially around the abdomen

Not everyone with insulin resistance is overweight, and not everyone with the symptoms above has insulin resistance. However, it can be an important reason to take a closer look at your blood sugar regulation and metabolism.
What can contribute to insulin resistance?
Insulin resistance is usually multifactorial, meaning that several factors often play a role at the same time. Examples include:
1. Nutrition
Regularly eating large amounts of fast carbohydrates, sugar, low-protein meals, low-fiber foods, and foods with poor nutritional value can place pressure on blood sugar regulation.
2. Lack of movement
Muscles use glucose as fuel. Physical activity helps your body absorb glucose more effectively and supports insulin sensitivity.
3. Chronic stress
Long-term stress increases stress hormones such as cortisol. This can affect blood sugar, appetite, sleep, and fat storage.
4. Sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality
Sleep plays a major role in hormone regulation, recovery, appetite, and insulin sensitivity. Poor sleep can noticeably disrupt blood sugar regulation.
5. Hormonal imbalance
For example, with PCOS, menopausal complaints, or other hormonal imbalances, insulin sensitivity may change.
6. Long-term lifestyle dysregulation
Irregular eating patterns, frequent snacking, high mental load, too few moments of recovery, and a disrupted day-night rhythm can all place additional strain on the system.
